He was a member of Tadcaster Town Council for nearly 20 years, and was its chairman for 4 years. He was a District Councillor in Selby District for 4 years. He is now a member of Alwoodley Parish Council.

He helps raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, and has shaken a tin for the Poppy Appeal for many years. He sings with two choirs and plays in two orchestras. He is a member of the Leeds Volunteer Footpath Rangers and of the Friends of Adel Woods.He enjoys walking and going to concerts.
